If a futuristic Urwerk piece isn't enough to express your vision, now you can wear a ceramic timepiece that tells you how long it takes light to reach a planet you'll never visit.

In my opinion, the UR-100V is a modern classic. While it appears to have a round dial, the UR-100V's signature design is its satellite hour display: the hour dial rotates around the lower half of the dial, while the minute markers are indicated by arrows. The UR-100V LightSpeed goes a step further with a three-dimensional planetary display, showcasing the eight planets of the solar system (excluding Pluto). Each position represents the precise time it takes for sunlight to reach that planet, so as the hour dial moves away from the minute markers, it indicates the corresponding time.


The dial is entirely black, with luminous numerals and text. The case measures 43mm x 51.73mm x 14.5mm and is crafted from Urwerk's own white ceramic, adorned with silver fiberglass fabric and carbon fiber inserts, and topped with a domed sapphire crystal. The inner case is made of titanium, while the case back is crafted from Grade 5 titanium treated with sandblasting, shot peening, and DLC coating. Inside, the watch houses the UR 12.02 automatic movement with a 48-hour power reserve, and the crown is located on the top of the case.

Every time Urwerk releases a new watch, I can't resist browsing the UR-100V on their website. This is definitely my favorite Urwerk design. While measuring the speed of light to reach other planets isn't exactly a "necessity" for me, I do find this case treatment more appealing than their engraved or dinosaur-scale textured cases. This is just my personal opinion. I guess my appreciation for avant-garde modern design ends here.

Urwerk has established itself in the world of cosmic watchmaking with its exquisite mechanical craftsmanship and sci-fi spaceship designs. Founders Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner are renowned for their roaming hour and satellite display functions, capturing the dimensions of time, rotation, and orbit in their 2019 UR-100 SpaceTime watch. As an upgrade to the UR-100, the UR-100V returns with a white ceramic composite case, displaying the limits of cosmic speed—representing the time it takes for a ray of sunlight to reach the eight planets of the solar system—in a clear graphical representation.

Behind Frei and Baumgartner's vision lies the question: if a connection between humanity and the cosmic order can be established, why be confined to the mundane display of hours and minutes? This is undoubtedly a challenging task. Their astronomical interpretation of time was finally replicated in 2024 on the first UR-100V LS satellite, capable of measuring the speed of light in the universe.

To demonstrate the fastest speed any object in the universe can reach, or the constant speed of massless electromagnetic energy particles (photons) in a vacuum at approximately 300,000 km/s, Urwerk presents the eight planets and the precise time it takes for light to travel from the sun to each planet on a dome-shaped, openworked black structure suspended above the running hour mechanism (for example, sunlight takes 3.2 minutes to reach Mercury, 8.3 minutes to Earth, and 4.1 hours to Neptune). This is not merely a static graphic; small blue and green hands appearing in the openworked area indicate the positions of the planets and connect to one of three rotating arms, completing a revolution around the dial every three hours. When the hand points to Saturn at 3 o'clock, it slides below the minute track and reappears at 9 o'clock.

A major highlight of this timepiece is its unique white ceramic case. The case measures 43 mm (width) × 51.73 mm (length) × 14.55 mm (thickness) and is made of a special composite ceramic material. Unlike traditional ceramics, which are easily broken under severe impact, Urwerk's composite ceramic is indestructible due to the addition of glass fiber and carbon fiber. The choice of a white case is no accident. As Frei points out, "...white is not a single color, but an optical effect. White is produced when all wavelengths of visible light are in balance." The silver speckles and layered structure created by the glass fibers are faintly visible on the white ceramic case.

Similar to other Urwerk watches, the hours are indicated by three rotating satellites, and the red arrow-shaped minute hand moves along a 120-degree arc track, with graduations from 0 to 60. For improved legibility, both the hours and minutes are coated with Super-LumiNova luminescent material.

The case back is made of black DLC-coated titanium, through which you can see the all-aluminum rotor adorned with rays and circles, inspired by the sun, which powers the UR 12.02 movement. This automatic movement vibrates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a power reserve of 48 hours. The UR-100V LightSpeed Ceramic watch comes with two rubber straps (black and white) and a folding clasp.
